KARL JASPERS
From The Great Fhilosophers, Volume II
Edited by Haunah Arendt
Professor Jaspers has divided his two-volume universal histor of philosophy into groups of philosophers who share common ch4raétêr istics, independent of the age in which they lived. Volume II, published in a Harvest edition iu three parts, is concerned with the original metaphysicians, meu who created a closed system of thought out of their individual visions. These include the Pre-Socraties Anaximander, Heraclitus, and Parmenides; Plotinus, who fiourished in third-century Rome; the Chiuese philosopher Lao-tzu, creator of the basic text of Taoism, and the Indiau Nagarjuua, one of the gréat Buddhist thinkers; Anselm of Cauterbury and Nicholas of Cusa, churchmen who within the framework of orthodoxy were able to philosophize with striking originality; and Spiuoza, a pure metaphvsician like Plotiuus, who developed his system of thought outside of ecciesiastical religion.
As in the first volume of The Great Fhilosophers, Professor Jaspers leads the reader dose to the persouality aI each thiuker, showing his philosophy as it was lived as well as thought and evaluating its significance today.
