The ark of the covenant
By one of those devices of contrast to which St. John has accustomed us, when the dread blast of the seventh trumpet resounds the curtain is raised upon a most reassuring sight: (1) Powerful voices proclaim to heaven the coming of the Lord God and of His Messiah, the inauguration of Their eternal kingdom (xi. 15). (2) The twenty-four ancients render homage and chant the benefis of the kingdom that is about to begin. They offer salutation to God "Who is and who was" but they no longer add (as in iv. 8) "Who is to come" for He has already come, His intervention has been effected. Annihilating the passing effects of the impotent anger of men, the anger of the Almighty comes to assure for each his chastisement or merited reward (xi. 16-18). (3) Towards the end of the canticle of the twenty-four ancients the heavenly scenery opens in the background and St. John perceives in the sanctuary of heaven the ark of the convenant whose appearance is greeted by lightnings, , voices, thunders, an earthquake and a fearsome hail (xi.19). The first sign in heaven follws without interval.
According to the Jewish tradition the ark of the covenant, which disappeared with the destruction of the temple of Salomon, was to reappear at the end of time (2 Mach. ii. 4-8) ...................
